Active Shooter Incidents increasing 2019 - 2020
What you or your loved ones should do if
you find yourself a target of an active shooter.
One second in the wrong place at the wrong time can change your life forever.
RUN, HIDE, and FIGHT. Escaping the active shooting area is paramount.
Find a place to hide, if you're unable to escape you’ll have to fight back against the active shooter.
Active shooter situations are on the rise, make sure that you know what to do if you ever find yourself in this circumstance.
IF YOUR STUCK IN AN
ACTIVE SHOOTER EVENT
Finding yourself stuck in an active shooter event, there’s three things you can do.
Run 1st, Hide 2nd Fight last, in that order. See below:
Running is your first priority in an active shooter, assaulting event. The second you hear gunfire, go to exits in your emergency plans you should have already practiced.
Get as far away from the danger as Possible.
Most people will refuse to move because of fear, ignorance, or assuming hiding is a better first alternative. However, running away will always be your best bet. Your safety above all else, requires as you leave the area you encounter police authorities, keep your hands high, visible, so law enforcement can easily determine if you are a threat or not.
If you are in an open area with no available cover, run as quick as possible to the nearest cover or exit. Consider you are the target, run in a zigzag pattern with sharp turns may help. Shooting moving targets is difficult even for top sharp shooting marksmen. Active shooters usually have little sharp shooting experience with firearms. If you are unable to run keep cover between yourself and the shooter to minimize your exposure to harm. When you're in a safe place, if authorities are not on scene yet, contact 911 immediately, never assume somebody else has.
Running is not always an option blocked available exits can prevent escape, so hide in a secure place.
A hiding spot that offers protection, if gunfire heads your direction. Search rooms with a lockable door. If no locking doors are available, barricade one with available furniture and heavy object,. to make it difficult for the shooter to enter.
Turn off all lights, stay quiet, set your phone to silent, get far away from the door, take up your position behind cover..
If you can, dial 911 let police know exactly where the active shooter is in the building. If the shooter may be near you, do not speak but leave the line on so dispatchers are able to hear.
Do not open the door until it's safe or your notified by police, shooters will knock on doors or yell for help to trick you into revealing your locations.
When hiding or running has failed or are not options, fight to protect yourself. Do all you can to fight for your life. In that instant, dump your fear and plan to disarm or incapacitate the shooter with whatever means necessary.
It is true armed civilians minimize the number of fatalities in active shooting incidents where there were armed civilians.
Civil defense civilians, whether armed or not, who take action against the shooter quickly can minimize the number of the victims as well. so if you do not plan to carry a firearm yourself, do not hesitate to defend yourself anyway.
IF OTHERS ARE HURT OR CALLING FOR HELP
When you are in a safe place, and the shooter is not close but you hear someone calling for help or knocking, only open the door for somebody else if you know the shooter isn’t in the area.
If someone is bleeding, do what you can to apply a tourniquet, apply pressure to the wound to save a life, make or create a tourniquet carefully slowing the bleeding then elevate the wounded area.
Check anyone that may have run into the shooter, there are times that people do not realize they are wounded, whether it’s due to shock or adrenaline.
IF AND WHEN HELP ARRIVES
Once the police arrive, they will not know who are the suspects, so you should put your hands up as well as spread your fingers to show you’re not brandishing or carrying anything unexposed that might be mistaken for a threatening weapon.
Do not run to police, only speak when spoken to. The goal of the police is to “end” the shooter, you should be directed to assistance care ASAP.
